Protector Instruction for Rib Guards

There are several retailors who sell various types of protectors. Some of them are cheap, but some of them are too expensive to say reasonable. And some of them must be too fragile that you should not use them.

Since we Marukado activity has gathered a lot of Kenshi all over Japan, the participants have witnessed several kinds of protectors. Thus two of them (615 and rusher) review them to offer you, our mate Kenshi, a practical buyers' guide here. Hope it helps you.

This page introduces protectors over the trunk. They are called "body protector", "chest guard", "rib guard", or "plastron".

Japanese Domestic Merchandise

Shorinji Kempo Official Body Protector (\ 26000, excluding Japanese consumption tax (5%), excluding postage.)
As known as "niju do", meaning a double protector. This new type protector has come through exclusive research and development by Shorinji Kempo Organization for years considering safety, fitness, and practicability.
●Advantages
  1. Its SHOCK ABSORPTION PERFORMANCE is very good. Even a full force kick doesn't penetrate into the gut.
  2. It is good to train "Keri Age", because the belly part surface is not flat but round,
  3. Easier to put on, rather than the strap types.
  4. The official body protector is AUTHENTIC. Since there has been a rumor for these years that the headquarters are going to proclaim to make all the kenshi use only this type of protector in both the promotion test and any official taikai, you can get rid of the anxiety if you have this official protector.
●Complaints
  1. it is incredibly EXPENSIVE. You can buy such chest/rib-guards in less than half prices in several online shopping website in Japan, U.S.A. or elsewhere.
  2. It absorbs blows at the abdomen, but not at the chest.
  3. I care tiny timing discrepancy between its collision and the impact, due to its double structure.
  4. Since the protector has 2 plates, I am afraid if they pinch my toes against my kick.
  5. It fits for me(175cm, 70kg), but I think it is a little bit bulky for somebody slender. They have to tighten the belts up, unless the protectors sway and prevent them from nimble motion.
  6. The sound is the largest feature, isn't it? Perhaps an attacker (kosha) gets himself/herself an illusion as if he/she is VERY good at punches and kicks.
  7. I hate the rubber straps.

It is conventional type of Do (protector) in Japan. It would be an old version protector sold by Ozaki or else, now it is obsoleted. It has sold core inside of the protector. So the benefit is that you have to land proper punch and kick against it.

●Advantages

  1. Light, thin, and small. so it is portable that you may force packing into the bag.
  2. Solid core seems inside of the plate.

●Complaints

  1. if you are well sinewed, this protector is too small.
  2. Although it is solid, it is so thin that the impact penetrates.
(3) and (4) are very popular among domestic Kenshi. I recommend you choose (3) or (4) along with your physique and taste.

Shorinji Kempo Do (body protector) by Ozaki

●Advantages
  1. The surface is enough wide to cover a normal male's trunk. If your phisique is large than mine (175cm, 72kg), it is good choice than other domestic candidates manufatured by Isami and so on.
  2. The material is soft and thick. You might force packing it into a bag.
●Complaints
  1. Too bulky for a slender person (less than 165cm).
  2. Since there is no rigid core inside of the protector, a devastating blow would penetrate into your gut. Ooph.

●Advantages

  1. cheap.
  2. light.
  3. doesn't bother my motion if you put it on properly.

●Complaints

  1. Since it doesn't have solid core, the impact penetrates very well. It's for a fellow with much endurance, or for kids who don't blow much powerfully.
  2. I feel less fit than (3).
The shock absorption performance is not good. The protectors manufactured by Body Maker have been rumored bad amongst us.
